Governance In order to promote group-wide environmental activities, we established the Environmental Committee chaired by LIXIL’s chief technology officer (CTO). The committee enlists the cooperation of LIXIL’s Board of Executive Officers and the Board of Directors, the Risk Management Committee, and the Corporate Responsibility (CR) Committee for its activities. These activities focus primarily on establishing a group-wide environmental management system and sharing and expanding organizational and regional measures. Strategy In FYE2020, we formulated our Environmental Vision 2050. Based on our Zero Carbon and Circular Living policy, by 2050, we aim to achieve net-zero carbon emissions and preserve water and natural resources in operations, housing and lifestyle solutions for future generations to become a leading company in environmental sustainability. We are pursuing a strict environmental strategy because we recognize that environmental problems such as climate change are one of our most important management issues that harbor both risks and opportunities for our business. We conduct scenario analysis and impact assessments starting with the business areas judged to be exposed to the greatest environmental risk, and use the analysis results to develop countermeasures and action plans. P20-21 Selection of Material Issues
Risk Management We pinpoint issues involving climate-related risks from among global social trends, industry-specific problems, and stakeholder expectations, and analyze their potential impact from a medium- to long-term perspective. Once the validity of the selected and evaluated issues has been examined within our environmental management system, the issues are approved by the Board of Executive Officers, and then identified as material issues. We formulate medium term action plans for material issues involving climate-related risks and regularly measure progress and outcomes.
Metrics and Targets Approximately 32% of the world’s energy is consumed in LIXIL’s main area of business, namely buildings (24% residential, 8% commercial), and that total is expected to more than double by 2050. We are aware of the important role LIXIL plays in achieving the long-term goals laid out in the Paris Agreement. For that reason, we manage Scope 1-3 CO₂ emissions through our environmental management system, and have set medium- to long-term targets to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 30% and Scope 3 emissions from product use by 15% by 2030 (v. FYE2016 levels). We have developed an action plan to achieve these targets, which we are currently executing. P31-33 Water Conservation & Environmental Sustainability
